Alone and homesick among the masses
\nIn this rain-grimed city, bejeweled
\nBy bail bonds’ neon and carts of tear-streaked cans,
\nI ponder love, without even the cloud-hidden
\nMoon to palely reflect the warmth of your eyes,
\nSmoldering, angry, sick with worry,
\nOr smiling in my mirrored gaze.
\nAnd I know, love is not a flower
\nThat blooms once, yearly, or as it please,
\nThat worships the sun while wondering
\nIf some other orb might perchance arrive.
\nNo, love abides even within the wet asphalt
\nAnd lonesome winds and dreary dark,
\nUnhidden it faces the buffets and pains
\nAnd smiles in the returning sun’s warmth.
\nNo petals to fold, no leaves to conceal,
\nIt grows through even distance and time,
\nSteady in storms and delights in the dawn
\nRising against my beloved’s true form.
\nNo, love is not a flower.
\nA flower plucked, smiles and dies.
