The unwary bicyclist was jarred out of her reverie as the dirt track crossed the remains of a defunct <\/em>acequia that once had served the now fallow fields.<\/em><\/p>\n

8. moraceous<\/strong> — of or about mulberry plants<\/p>\n

Ovid tells how Pyramis and Thisbe died beneath a mulberry tree, their blood forever staining the <\/em>moraceous fruit a dark red.<\/em><\/p>\n

9. callow<\/strong> — immature or unworldly<\/p>\n

Face to face I was struck by his <\/em>callow understanding of social graces, the result (as I supposed) of learning about the world through various electronic screens.<\/em><\/p>\n

10. dropsy<\/strong> — old-fashioned word for edema, the often painful swelling of interstitial spaces in the body with fluid <\/p>\n
