to smear with a sticky substance<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Though the handle of his baseball bat had been thoroughly <\/em>gaumed<em> with pine tar, it still slipped effortlessly out of his tight grip when he swung fiercely at a curve ball.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>dubiety<\/strong> &#8212; doubt, the state of being dubious<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>He listened to his teenaged son&#8217;s explanation for the missing car fender with increasing <\/em>dubiety<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>thyratron<\/strong> &#8212; gas-filled cathode tube acting as electrical switch and rectifier<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Though of course most old <\/em>thyratrons<em> have been replaced by the similarly named solid-state thyristors, the glass tubes are still used in high-power applications such as particle accelerators.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>firkin<\/strong> &#8212; small cask for liquids, etc., holding a quarter of a barrel<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The pony keg found at a frat boy&#8217;s football party is almost a direct descendant of the aledraper&#8217;s  <\/em>firkin<em>, though the barrel of ale was of a greater volume than that used for kegs today.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. <strong>underwood<\/strong> &#8212; small trees or shrubs grown beneath timber<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>In some cases clearing out the <\/em>underwood<em> allows the timber to grow larger and more quickly, though this will depend upon the specific situation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>vaticide<\/strong> &#8212; murderer of a prophet; act of killing a prophet<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Though five men were charged with the murder of Joseph Smith, all were acquitted in the biased court and the <\/em>vaticides<em> were never punished for their crimes, at least not in this worldly life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>bumbaste<\/strong> &#8212; to beat on the buttocks; thus, to beat soundly<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The snake oil salesman was <\/em>bumbasted<em> by his indignant audience before being driven out of town.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>9. <strong>chicane<\/strong> &#8212; subterfuge, trick; to quibble, cavil<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>&#8220;What <\/em>chicane<em> is this?&#8221; he cried as he plucked the fake pornstache from the hapless salesman&#8217;s face.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>10. <strong>wainscoting<\/strong> &#8212; paneling of walls or halls, often only on the lower section <\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>If you insist on putting plywood panels on the walls of your basement, be sure to call it <\/em>wainscoting<em> when you try to sell your home.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1. gormless &#8212;
