The Leningrad Cowboys are known for their <\/em>winklepickers and overlong quiff haircuts.<\/em><\/p>\n

3. manqu\u00e9<\/strong> \u2014 “That might have been but is not.” [Oxford]<\/p>\n

Like some sort of scholar <\/em>manqu\u00e9 he had substituted Internet bookmarks for books, Post-its\u00ae for research notes, opinions for articles, and food-stained t-shirts for tweed jackets with elbow patches.<\/em><\/p>\n

4. vellus hair<\/strong> \u2014 short, almost invisible hairs covering most of the human body save for the head<\/p>\n

Do not be fooled by the claims of this hair growth formula, as <\/em>vellus hairs are often seen on the scalps of those suffering from male pattern baldness.<\/em><\/p>\n

5. peg out<\/strong> \u2014 (British slang<\/em>) to die; to be wiped out<\/p>\n

He’s passed out in the back bedroom now, and he’ll be better in the morning, assuming he doesn’t just <\/em>peg out before then.<\/em><\/p>\n

6. cook-general<\/strong> \u2014 (British<\/em>) servant performing both general housekeeping and cooking<\/p>\n

In their straitened circumstances they were forced to let go all their servants save for Nancy, the old retainer who took on the duties of a <\/em>cook-general in spite of her inaptitude in the kitchen.<\/em><\/p>\n

7. benison<\/strong> \u2014 blessing, benediction<\/p>\n

Secure in nature’s <\/em>benison beneath the vault of distant stars in the clear sky, I slept soundly amidst the pines.<\/em><\/p>\n

8. supercilious<\/strong> \u2014 contemptuously superior or disdainful<\/p>\n

Her unfitness for parenting was shown by her <\/em>supercilious comment when her visiting nephews disturbed her usually placid home: “Now I understand why animals eat their young.”<\/em><\/p>\n

9. fungo<\/strong> \u2014 (baseball<\/em>) soft fly ball hit for fielding practice<\/p>\n

His hand-eye coordination is so bad he can’t even hit <\/em>fungoes with a wiffle ball and bat.<\/em><\/p>\n

10. charivari<\/strong> \u2014 mock serenade with kitchen implements for newly marrieds; clamor of noise<\/p>\n

We are told that the Punk Jazz movement has quite serious antecedents, but the performance last night seemed merely a <\/em>charivari of discord played by people we resist calling ‘musicians’.<\/em><\/p>\n
