A teenager may stumble upon a novel which seems to speak powerfully to him or her, and in this resonance approach this literary work as a <\/em>enchiridion for solving the problem of life.<\/em><\/p>\n

6. oology<\/strong> — the study of eggs<\/p>\n

Though of course birds provide most examples, <\/em>oology includes in its ambit the ova of reptiles as well.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

7. noology<\/strong> — the study of knowledge and knowing<\/p>\n

Deep thinkers may ponder mysteries and contribute to <\/em>noology, but many doctoral theses seem evidence only that thought is a branch of nosology.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

8. fleuron<\/strong> — a flower-shaped decorative element<\/p>\n

The medieval gargoyles hid drainspouts as they glowered beneath <\/em>fleurons of stone.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

9. burlesque<\/strong> — an art form that inverts the usual mode of presenting material for comedic effect, giving gravitas to lesser subjects or treating vulgarly more dignified matter<\/p>\n

A serious poem<\/a> about washing dishes runs the risk of slipping into <\/em>burlesque.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

10. pongid<\/strong> — pertaining to a great ape (the gorilla, chimpanzee, or orangutan)<\/p>\n
