Their tails beat a metronome of desire
\nAs the last candle concedes its fire.
\nThey trail my wife with eager feet
\nHovering, quavering, awaiting their treat.
\nAs she closes the door and from the pantry repairs,
\nAlready the twain have dashed up the stairs,
\nAttentive and breathless, with focus complete,
\nAs idle footfalls sound retreat.
\nSo patient now they impatiently wait,
\nBonny in her bed, and Blaze in his crate.<\/p>\n
Then Anne doles the biscuits and pats each head,
\nBlaze in his crate and Bonny abed.
\nBut gone in an instant is each dog’s prize,
\nSo curl they now with falling sighs,
\nAwait their sleep and happy dreams of chase
\nWhile Anne brushes teeth and washes face.
\nShe stops at the doorway to contemplate
\nBonny in her bed, and Blaze in his crate.<\/p>\n
Finally still since the first of the day
\nAre the dogs that did frolic and play
\nAnd dote on their mistress and lie at her feet
\nAnd cavil all foreign dogs in the street.
\nEvery step in the kitchen Blaze did investigate,
\nWhile Bonny kept guard nose beneath the gate.<\/p>\n
Now the proud warriors of hearth and home
\nInto fields of dream will roam.
\nThe bedroom by the moon palely lit,
\nWhile hiccup-like barks in their slumber emit,
\nAs twitching paws race with imagined tread:
