{"id":2695,"date":"2020-03-20T04:34:42","date_gmt":"2020-03-20T11:34:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/educatedguesswork.com\/?p=2695"},"modified":"2020-03-19T17:48:58","modified_gmt":"2020-03-20T00:48:58","slug":"friday-vocabulary-97","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educatedguesswork.com\/?p=2695","title":{"rendered":"Friday Vocabulary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>1. <strong>vaporing<\/strong> \u2014 bragging, boastful talk<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>For all your <\/em>vaporing<em> about how fine a handyman you are, you&#8217;ve done precious little work around the house.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>gore<\/strong> \u2014 triangular or wedge-shaped piece of fabric used as part of a garment, sail, etc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The manufacture of the hot air balloon required the most stringent attention to detail, beginning with the parti-colored <\/em>gores<em> making up the most important part of the aerial transport.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>nictitating membrane<\/strong> \u2014 third or inner eyelid for protection from dust and keeping eyes moist<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The chicken&#8217;s <\/em>nictitating membrane<em> was drawn over her eyes, giving her a foul, leprous gaze.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>credenza<\/strong> \u2014 (also <strong>credence<\/strong>) dining room sideboard or table, used for buffets or for setting dishes to be served<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>She had held on through her various moves to her grandmother&#8217;s  <\/em>credenza<em>, believing it to be a priceless antique, though those hopes were soon to be dashed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>malefaction<\/strong> \u2014 evil deed, wrong-doing<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The worst part of my <\/em>malefactions<em> has not been the direct harm I&#8217;ve done to others, but the further evils perpetrated by those who were inspired\u2014if that is the right word\u2014by my bad actions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. <strong>cannula<\/strong> \u2014 tube for insertion into the body either to allow fluid to escape or to introduce medication<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>In cryosurgery the surgeon kills the diseased tissue using liquid nitrogen directed at the specific target through a thin <\/em>cannula<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>dorp<\/strong> \u2014 small village, thorp<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The choice of the moneyed men of the cities was widely rejected by every <\/em>dorp<em> and hamlet where farmers still held to the old ideals.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>quixotic<\/strong> \u2014 enthusiastically idealistic; impractically romantic<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>&#8220;Don&#8217;t you think it all too <\/em>quixotic<em> of you to expect everyone not to pronounce that selfsame word as if the first syllable rhymed with &#8216;tricks&#8217;?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>9. <strong>colure<\/strong> \u2014 one of the two meridians of the celestial sphere, one passing through the solstices and the other through the equinoxes, both intersecting above the Earth&#8217;s poles<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The two <\/em>colures<em> divide the heavens into four parts, though we on the seas can only see the half of it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>10. <strong>scramasax<\/strong> \u2014 knife or short sword with a single edge used by the Anglo-Saxons<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>I doubt that Otho&#8217;s <\/em>scramasax<em> had ever been put to the vile use I now made of it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1. vaporing \u2014 bragging, boastful talk For all your vaporing about how fine a handyman you are, you&#8217;ve done precious little work around the house. &nbsp;
