The approach to the mystery
\nIs not made by paths of ritual.
\nThough four hundred thousand
\nHave trod this trail before,
\nTheir footsteps leave no trace
\nTo guide the wary traveler.
\nInstead,
\nConsider the sensation of that small eyelash
\nOr mite of dust, beneath the eyelids
\nAs you rub them wearily, even doubting
\nThat any disturbance lies close at hand
\nAt all.
\nThe imaginary itch may be sign or an illusion,
\nDistraction, obsession, or rent in the veil.
\nPossibly some secret hides itself to be extracted,
\nPerhaps an old ache has merely left its ghostly pang.
\nEven if removed, no surety that the irritant is gone.
\nFrom too roughly desiring clarity, an irritation remains.
\nAnd only a gradual waning of the presence or shadow
\nGives negative proof to any change at all.
\nWill you see any more clearly?
