to flow and burble<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>They sat together on a small blanket spread out upon the grassy bank, watching the gentle brook as it <\/em>purled<em> through the mossy rocks on its lazy way to the lake.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>coppice<\/strong> \u2014 copse, thicket or underwood grown for intermittent cutting<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The dogs ran off at once into the tangled <\/em>coppice<em> to our left and we tried to follow, cursing and tearing our clothes in the process.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>skewbald<\/strong> \u2014 marked with patches of white and brown <\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Jerome&#8217;s <\/em>skewbald<em> pony stood hobbled near the oak, and the embers in the fire still produced a thin trail of smoke, but no other sign of the preacher did we see.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>behoovely<\/strong> \u2014 necessary, fitting [appears to be a hapax legomenon used only by Julian of Norwich]<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The rough parts of the road are <\/em>behoovely<em> though this may be clear to us only at our final destination.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>cotta<\/strong> \u2014 surplice, often with box pleats<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The mass of seminarians, stern yet joyful in their cassocks and <\/em>cottas<em>, strode across the greensward before the assembled parents and other well-wishers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. <strong>farthingale<\/strong> \u2014 hooped petticoat or frame worn beneath a woman&#8217;s skirts to extend them<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Although there is no evidence that Henry IV of France hid beneath the <\/em>farthingale<em> of Marguerite de Valois, the wife of another Henry IV\u2014Joan of Portugal, wife of Henry IV of Castile\u2014is credited with originating the bizarre fashion trend, perhaps to hide embarrassing pregnancies.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>surrebuttal<\/strong> \u2014 (<em>Law<\/em>) plaintiff&#8217;s response to a defendant&#8217;s rebuttal<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>In any true debate there should be provision made for (at the very least) argument, rebuttal, and <\/em>surrebuttal<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>instauration<\/strong> \u2014 renewal, restoration;
