in everyday speech.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>asperse<\/strong> \u2014 to bespatter with false accusations; to slander, to traduce<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>That one of such vile reputation and sordid history should attempt to <\/em>asperse<em> my own actions and motivations with these base canards is a double affront.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. <strong>ecod<\/strong> \u2014 mild oath (variant of &#8216;egad&#8217;)<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>&#8220;<\/em>Ecod<em>, man, would you rather I left you to the mercies of the Duke&#8217;s men?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>volary<\/strong> \u2014 large bird cage, aviary<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Where you see a beautiful manor, I see a gilded <\/em>volary<em> where you and I and all such free spirits would be confined and imprisoned forevermore.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>glad eye<\/strong> \u2014 friendly or flirtatious glance<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Though she spoke only to my client, I noticed her giving me the <\/em>glad eye<em> whenever she looked my way.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>9. <strong>hypertrophy<\/strong> \u2014 excessive growth or development<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Samuel&#8217;s addiction to texting has resulted in severe <\/em>hypertrophy<em> of the thumb and first two fingers on his right hand.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>10. <strong>mephitic<\/strong> \u2014 foul-smelling;
