{"id":3569,"date":"2021-10-15T10:27:33","date_gmt":"2021-10-15T17:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/educatedguesswork.com\/?p=3569"},"modified":"2021-10-15T10:27:33","modified_gmt":"2021-10-15T17:27:33","slug":"friday-vocabulary-177","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educatedguesswork.com\/?p=3569","title":{"rendered":"Friday Vocabulary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>1. <strong>doolally<\/strong> \u2014 [<em>informal British<\/em>] out of one&#8217;s head, temporarily non compos mentis<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>&#8220;You see, George went a bit <\/em>doolally<em> after losing last night, and he&#8217;s burnt the whole game, box and all.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>thurifer<\/strong> \u2014 acolyte carrying the thurible<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>We first began to suspect that something was wrong with the <\/em>thurifer<em> when the young lad swung his censer directly into the flowered hat of old Mrs. Partimbeke, knocking off the gaudy headwear in a cloud of smoke and ash.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>maculate<\/strong> \u2014 to spot or stain, to defile<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The once pristine shopping mall had been <\/em>maculated<em> by pop-up cellular service stands, noodle and pizza vendors, and abandoned spaces where once proud anchor stores had reigned.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>adventitious<\/strong> \u2014 accidental, supervenient, extrinsic<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Perhaps what we think of as the supreme glories of civilization are merely the <\/em>adventitious<em> consequences of an evolutionary mistake, the accidental byproducts of a self-consciousness which has yet to prove its ultimate value.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>triolet<\/strong> \u2014 eight-line poem having rhyme scheme <em>abaaabab<\/em> with 1st line repeated as the 4th and 7th lines, and the 2nd as the 8th<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Suddenly he realized that his back and forth with the customer service rep formed a sort of misshapen <\/em>triolet<em>, and he had the thought that if poetry could be found on the complaint line to Frito-Lay, perhaps it truly could be found everywhere.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. <strong>supercargo<\/strong> \u2014 merchant ship&#8217;s officer in charge of the cargo and its sale<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Truth be told, when I allowed my nephew to ship out as <\/em>supercargo<em> of the <\/em>Bain Marie<em>, I had little hope that he would do more than break even on the voyage.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>epicondyle<\/strong> \u2014 rounded protuberance on or above the condyle of a long bone<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The wound pattern shows clearly that he was struck in the temple by the medial <\/em>epicondyle<em> of the humerus bone found at the scene, though nobody seems to know what that bone was doing there, besides being used as a weapon, I mean.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>clonic<\/strong> \u2014 of or related to spasmodic muscular convulsions<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>But as soon as I released the arm the <\/em>clonic<em> contractions began once more, which Pieter was apparently unable to control.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>9. <strong>fatidic<\/strong> \u2014 prophetic<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>At the time, of course, we thought he was merely reciting his latest burlesque; it was only later that we realized the <\/em>fatidic<em> portent of Gunnard&#8217;s poem.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>10. <strong>proscenium<\/strong> \u2014 that part of the stage in front of the curtain; in ancient theatre, the stage itself<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>What if all our years of life are merely moments upon the <\/em>proscenium<em> of existence, if this time upon the earth is mere prologue to the greater drama of creation which will be unveiled when the curtain rises after what we so unknowingly call our demise?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Bonus Vocabulary<\/h4>\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">(British slang)<\/p>\n<p><strong>lock-in<\/strong> \u2014 private party after hours at British pub where customers are &#8216;locked in&#8217;
