pliable, easily molded<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>But the <\/em>sequacious<em> and vulgar habits of the multitude are so ingrained that only with extreme difficulty can they be roused even to fight for their own best interests.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>periculous<\/strong> \u2014 [<em>obsolete<\/em>] perilous<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>But of all these spiritual dangers, the most <\/em>periculous<em> is that deceit of the Tempter which makes weary the soul and plagues the heart in the dark of the night.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>boxty<\/strong> \u2014 Irish potato pancake or bread<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Some like their <\/em>boxty<em> with sour cream and scallions or even bacon and eggs, but I prefer mine simply with lots of butter.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>beakhead<\/strong> (also <strong>beak-head<\/strong>) \u2014 projecting platform at the forwardmost part of a sailing ship, where decorated rams were mounted in ancient times<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>And with one final glimpse of the gaudy <\/em>beakhead<em> of the pirate galley which had seemed so menacing mere moments ago, we saw the last vessel of the predacious squadron sink beneath the sea.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. <strong>borstal<\/strong> \u2014 reformatory school for juvenile delinquents<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Despite their reputation, you were far less likely to feel the birch across your buttocks in a <\/em>borstal<em> than in the fine public schools of England.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>farrow<\/strong> \u2014 litter of pigs; to give birth to a litter of pigs<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>So prolific a pig was of course the exception rather than the rule, but that sow <\/em>farrowed<em> twice a year while that evil-tempered boar was at MacLeary&#8217;s farm.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>farrow<\/strong> \u2014 (of a cow) not pregnant, barren<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Later he sold a <\/em>farrow<em> cow to the preacher, still full of spite after the harsh words of the Lenten sermon.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>9. <strong>quoin<\/strong> \u2014 external corner of building or wall; wedge for aiming ship&#8217;s cannon; wedge for locking type for printing <\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The pirates thought his skill with <\/em>quoin<em> and linstock was almost unearthly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>10. <strong>hammam<\/strong> \u2014 Turkish bath<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>In the dark and moody <\/em>hammam<em> David lay upon the towel-covered hot stone wrapped in his peshtemal, waiting for the tellak.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>11. <strong>prehension<\/strong> \u2014 grasping, act of taking hold<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Even now, years after the fateful events of that awful summer, the couple&#8217;s movements and faces still seemed marked by the <\/em>prehension<em> of that overwhelming fear of long ago.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>12. <strong>concrescence<\/strong> \u2014 growing together of originally separate parts<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The science fiction writers of the 1940s and 1950s saw a future where the continued expansion of suburbs and freeways would lead inevitably to an enormous megalopolis being formed upon the Eastern seaboard, a giant <\/em>concrescence<em> of the once great cities of the American past into an overwhelming super-city which would swallow up all smaller towns and municipalities in its path.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>13. <strong>midinette<\/strong> \u2014 Parisian salesgirl or milliner&#8217;s assistant<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Even the poorest <\/em>midinette<em> in her cheapest coat knows more about style than ninety-five out of a hundred American tourists.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>14. <strong>chopine<\/strong> \u2014 thick soled, almost stilt-like, shoes worn by European women in 18th Century <\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>A direct line runs from the clunky hoof silhouette of the awkward <\/em>chopine<em> to the supposedly sexy outline of the present day stiletto.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>15. <strong>seity<\/strong> \u2014 selfhood<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Though the creation of language leads inevitably to the ascendancy of <\/em>seity<em> in moderns, the primacy of communication presupposes a social order that may be obviated by the fixation, not to say obsession, with an almost solipsist self-love.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>16. <strong>parturition<\/strong> \u2014 childbirth<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>It is all very well and good to bemoan and belabor the pains of mental <\/em>parturition<em>; those pains cannot even begin to compare with the real thing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>17. <strong>foist<\/strong> \u2014 to impose an unwanted thing upon, to palm off<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>No one dares challenge the power of these liars, and so a mad devotion to idiocy is <\/em>foisted<em> into the very laws which were supposed to protect the public from such conmen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>18. <strong>shog<\/strong> \u2014 to shake or roll from side to side; to walk or move in jerks<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The monster <\/em>shogged<em> towards us across the barn, and I was less frightened than bemused; how had this ponderous beast terrified the whole community?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>19. <strong>guyot<\/strong> \u2014 flat-topped seamount <\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The ocean&#8217;s motion has swept away the tops of the <\/em>guyots<em>, which once were ordinary looking mountains before they sank beneath the waves.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>20. <strong>rebozo<\/strong> \u2014 long woven shawl worn over the head and shoulders of Spanish and Mexican women<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Wrapped in her pale blue <\/em>rebozo<em> the silent woman hunched over the cooking pot, stirring without cease.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Bonus Vocabulary<\/h4>\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">(British slang)<\/p>\n<p><strong>chancer<\/strong> \u2014 reckless and unscrupulous opportunist<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>His so-called friends are nothing but <\/em>chancers<em> and oafs, always ready with a scheme to separate Petey from his specie, but never there when the boy really needs a helping hand.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">(British slang, now somewhat Yuppie)<\/p>\n<p><strong>sorted<\/strong> \u2014 completed, organized, arranged<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>&#8220;The drinks are all <\/em>sorted<em>;
