{"id":3969,"date":"2022-11-18T10:40:07","date_gmt":"2022-11-18T18:40:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/educatedguesswork.com\/?p=3969"},"modified":"2022-11-18T10:40:07","modified_gmt":"2022-11-18T18:40:07","slug":"friday-vocabulary-232","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educatedguesswork.com\/?p=3969","title":{"rendered":"Friday Vocabulary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>1. <strong>peroration<\/strong> \u2014 [<em>rhetoric<\/em>] concluding section of speech, in which orator sums up main points and attempts to inspire enthusiasm<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>By the resumption of the strident tones with which he&#8217;d begun his overlong speech, I judged that he was building up to his <\/em>peroration<em> and trying to arouse his audience from their irritable slumber.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>venery<\/strong> \u2014 [<em>archaic<\/em>] hunting, the chase<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Of the enormous cultural apparatus associated with <\/em>venery<em> from early in the middle ages into almost the modern era, only the somewhat silly association of particular terms for groups of animals remains, save for a small rump remnant of present-day devotees of falconry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>venery<\/strong> \u2014 [<em>archaic<\/em>] devotion to sexual pleasure, sexual congress<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The symptoms of overindulgence in <\/em>venery<em> are similar to those found in habitual masturbators: weak chins, poor vision, listlessness, slumped shoulders, and a complete lack of moral fibre.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>unlax<\/strong> \u2014 [<em>slang<\/em>] to relax<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>&#8220;Come on, Paul, sit yourself down on the couch and <\/em>unlax<em> awhile.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>skean dhu<\/strong> \u2014 [<em>Scots<\/em>] small knife worn in the top of the hose of Highland Scots<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>&#8220;Of course the blade of my <\/em>skean dhu<em> is sharp, razor sharp, for what would be the use of a dull knife?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. <strong>subpoena duces tecum<\/strong> \u2014 [<em>Latin<\/em>] writ commanding person to produce documents to the court<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>He tried to evade answering questions about his original contract with the trust, so we served him with a <\/em>subpoena duces tecum<em> forcing him to bring before the court that document and any additional papers detailing his arrangement with Mr. Roma.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>selcouth<\/strong> \u2014 [<em>archaic<\/em>] strange, marvelous, unusual<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>And now the <\/em>selcouth<em> monster rose from the dark water, his many slimy arms smashing down the brave warriors as if they were ninepins.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>soup and fish<\/strong> \u2014 [<em>slang<\/em>] tuxedo, evening clothes<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>So get yourself all togged up in a <\/em>soup and fish<em> so you can at least try to blend in when we spend the evening dancing with the swells.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>9. <strong>palooka<\/strong> \u2014 [<em>slang<\/em>] ineffectual athlete, esp. a boxer; stupid person, lout<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>&#8220;You got no reason to be afeared of that old <\/em>palooka<em>, Joe!
