{"id":4743,"date":"2024-12-20T11:10:16","date_gmt":"2024-12-20T19:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/educatedguesswork.com\/?p=4743"},"modified":"2024-12-20T11:10:16","modified_gmt":"2024-12-20T19:10:16","slug":"friday-vocabulary-325","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educatedguesswork.com\/?p=4743","title":{"rendered":"Friday Vocabulary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>1. <strong>Quinquagesima<\/strong> \u2014 final Sunday before Lent, beginning of Carnival<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The first appearance of <\/em>Quinquagesima<em> as a pre-Lenten feast (there is some evidence for the term being used for an anticipatory fast) cannot be found in Italy earlier than the 6th Century.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>bimble<\/strong> \u2014 [<em>British<\/em>] to walk about in a meandering way with no fixed purpose<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>After we&#8217;d taken care of the luggage, we <\/em>bimbled<em> about the city, or at least the rather scruffy part of it surrounding the bus station.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>holland blind<\/strong> (sometimes capitalized) \u2014 window shade consisting of heavy fabric around a roller which is lowered or raised to cover or uncover the window<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>He&#8217;d hidden the dangerous document by rolling it up inside the <\/em>holland blind<em> in the bedroom, but of course the agents found it almost immediately.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>defilade<\/strong> \u2014 protection in a military position from observation or direct gunfire<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The lieutenant had selected the site because of its excellent <\/em>defilade<em>, but he hadn&#8217;t figured on the Jerry artillery already having targeted our location because of just those same supposed advantages.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>cafard<\/strong> \u2014 overwhelming depression<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>When she was seized by the <\/em>cafard<em>, he&#8217;d learned that there was nothing he could do to help her, no word or suggestion or action on his part would make her melancholy any less, or any less lengthy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. <strong>mistrustless<\/strong> \u2014 unsuspecting, trusting<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Like all of his <\/em>mistrustless<em> race he was easy prey for these first emissaries of so-called civilization.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>strangury<\/strong> \u2014 painful and frequent urge to urinate, even when bladder is empty<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>While it is true that <\/em>strangury<em> frequently accompanies gonorrhea, the social disease is by no means the only cause of that painful complaint.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>appulse<\/strong> \u2014 forceful movement towards or against; apparent nearness between astronomical objects, conjunction<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The close <\/em>appulse<em> of the lips required for the &#8216;m&#8217; sound being almost impossible for several weeks after the accident, he could sound only a guttural &#8216;Aaargh!&#8217; sound whenever he wish to call Margaret.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>9. <strong>recalcitrant<\/strong> \u2014 stubbornly defiant; refractory, unmanageable<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Somehow Mrs. Srimamsadeva had managed to turn the most <\/em>recalcitrant<em> 10th grader in the school into a model student, and all of the other teachers were anxious to learn her secret.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>10. <strong>spindly<\/strong> \u2014 long and thin, esp. someone or something seeming weak or fragile<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Chaz was a <\/em>spindly<em> thing leaning always against the wall by the door, his left boot hooked into a chair as if he feared a sudden gust of wind might blow him away.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Bonus Vocabulary<\/h4>\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">(slang, 1920s &#038; 1930s, from popular brand of the time)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Merry Widow<\/strong> \u2014 condom<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>&#8220;Be sure to have a couple of <\/em>Merry Widows<em> handy, if you know what I mean.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
