silliness<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>We had left early for our ride to the abbey, and so missed all the <\/em>rannygazoo<em> with the disappearing and reappearing silver ewer which terribly upset Mother.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>kakorrhaphiophobia<\/strong> \u2014 fear of failure<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>To confront and defeat his paralyzing <\/em>kakorrhaphiophobia<em>, Edward began a strenuous program of skydiving, karaoke, ballroom dancing, and slam poetry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>parasang<\/strong> \u2014 historical Persian unit of distance, approximately 3-1\/2 miles<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The foul but wise man informed us we were still at least a day&#8217;s march from the temple, but added that he would be happy to accompany us for a few <\/em>parasangs<em>, so we controlled our instinctive response and thanked him for gracing us with his redolent presence.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>indomptable<\/strong> (also <strong>indomptible<\/strong>) \u2014 indomitable, uncontrollable<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Much as I&#8217;ve always respected Perkins for his <\/em>indomptable<em> courage (as shown in the incident with the Major&#8217;s horse), I never thought much of his racing tips.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>swayback<\/strong> \u2014 animal (esp. a horse) with a sagging spine<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Finally he understood why his father had been at such pains to purchase the <\/em>swayback<em> nag.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. <strong>gas and gaiters<\/strong> \u2014 [<em>slang<\/em>] the cat&#8217;s pajamas, good times<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>&#8220;Now if we can only find Captain Braddock&#8217;s artificial leg it&#8217;ll be <\/em>gas and gaiters<em> for us!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>lich-wake<\/strong> (also <strong>lyke-wake<\/strong>) \u2014 [<em>obsolete<\/em>] the ritual vigil over a corpse before burial<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Soaked by the rain, my boots and trousers bespattered with mud, I was glad to see the three gloomy watchers at the <\/em>lich-wake<em>, and I approached the bier with candles at each end knowing that I was not too late.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>gadroon<\/strong> &#8211; raised decorative curves on silverware or other objets d&#8217;art<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>Sitting next to Sir Feldrow meant hours of listening to discussion of <\/em>gadroons<em> and ogees, and the merits of paktong versus German silver, so I steeled myself for the ordeal ahead and tried on my best &#8220;Oh, isn&#8217;t that interesting?&#8221; visage.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>9. <strong>botheration<\/strong> \u2014 annoyance, effort<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><em>The old hound was a joy and a true help on the hunt but this new puppy is a <\/em>botheration<em> only and I&#8217;m thinking of giving him to Jessie, over to the Stewarts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>10. <strong>bellwether<\/strong> \u2014 predictor or herald of future trends;
