Friday Vocabulary

1. inguinal — of or related to the groin

As I stood panting on the path, trying to espy something in the dim trees to either side, a sudden blow to my inguinal region laid me out, and I nearly passed out as I heard someone or something running heavily away through the dark woods.

 

2. mirliton — musical instrument played by humming through tube with a sounding membrane, kazoo, eunuch flute; chayote vegetable

Though the lowly kazoo was supposedly invented in Macon, Georgia, the mirliton has a much older history and was found around the world.

 

3. babbitt (also babbitt metal) — anti-friction alloy used to diminish heat in bearings

This formula for babbitt only produces twenty pounds at a time, so may not be best for high demand uses such as a busy railroad.

 

4. rocket — arugula

For lunch we had a rocket salad garnished with curried chicken and grapes.

 

5. adiabatic — of or related to a process closed to heat transfer

As the air rises it cools in an adiabatic process, which may cause clouds to reach the dew point temperature, causing rains on the windward sides of mountain ranges.

 

6. coryza — inflammation of nasal mucous membranes

Afflicted by his coryza, he couldn’t smell the poison in his coffee—indeed it is surprising that he was drinking coffee at all.

 

7. anile — of or related to an old woman or crone

Normally, of course—but pent up as we were by Trelawny’s ravings and our lack of sleep and our exhaustion from the climb out of that benighted ditch … well, the sudden apparition of that crazed, anile witch made my heart jump, I can tell you.

 

8. stanhope — two- or four-wheeled horse-drawn buggy

Wilks offered the use of his stanhope and we happily accepted, promising to return both gig and horse on the morrow.

 

9. scrumpy — strong cider

He’s most all right, Will is, long as he only has the one or maybe two pulls of scrumpy, but any more’n that and he’s not a fellow you’ll want to know.

 

10. braw — [Scots] handsome

He was a braw man, a captain of the guards, and she thought he looked so fine in his uniform and so she was undone.
